Indian Overseas Bank famously called with its acronym IOB was established on 10.02.1937 by Sri. M. Chidambaram Chettiar, experienced banking personnel to concentrate in overseas banking. Indian Overseas Bank commenced its business in 3 branches simultaneously at Karaikudi, Chennai and Myanmar. Indian Overseas Bank started extending its branches and enlarging its operations both in India and abroad. Indian Overseas Bank was nationalized along with 13 other banks in 1969. Mr. S. A. BHAT, Chairman and Managing Director and Shri G. Narayanan, Executive Director are the directors of Indian Overseas Bank at present.

As on May 9th, 09 there are 1913 Indian Overseas Bank branches in India and other countries. All Indian Overseas Bank branches are working under Core Banking Platform. The total income of the Bank increased to Rs. 11, 237crores in 2008 – 2009 compared to Rs. 8, 776crores in 2007 – 2008, with a growth of 28.04%. The net profit of Indian Overseas Bank has also increased to Rs. 1, 326crores at 10.32% as compared to the previous year.
